Timeline
The American Osteopathic Board of Anesthesiology administers primary and subspecialty certification exams and Osteopathic Continuous Certification (OCC) requirements. The following stages represent key milestones in the process to obtain primary board certification in Anesthesiology.
Written Exam
1. January through mid-May of your second year (CA-1) in residency: Register for the AOBA Written Exam to be taken your second year of residency training in June is complete.
2. August: Take the AOBA Written Exam.
Oral Exam
3. March through July of your third year (CA-2) in residency: Register for the AOBA Oral Exam to be taken once your third year of residency training in June is complete.
4. June: Complete your third year of residency training.
5. Fall: Take the AOBA Oral Exam.
Clinical Exam
6. March through July after one year of clinical practice: Apply and register for the AOBA Clinical Exam.
7. Winter or Spring Administration: AOBA Clinical Exam administered twice each year.
8. Clinical Exam Results: Reviewed by the AOBA for approval.
Become Board Certified
9. Upon successful completion of all exam components, the AOBA will recommend osteopathic board certification to the AOA.
10. You will receive a letter from the AOA via email once certification has been approved.
11. You are now board certified. You will receive your certification in the mail within 6 weeks upon notification of approval.
12. Your primary certification in Anesthesiology will remain active provided you successfully complete Osteopathic Continuous Certification requirements.
Osteopathic Continuous Certification
13. Maintain active licensure.
14. Participate in lifelong learning and continuing medical education.
15. Complete the cognitive assessment.
16. Complete the practice performance assessment.
