AOA advocacy win: Alberta, Canada, recognizes AOA board certification and residency training

Thursday, July 10, 2025

The AOA is dedicated to advancing recognition and practice rights for osteopathic physicians abroad, and recently achieved a major win in Alberta, Canada. Following years of advocacy by the AOA, the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners and the Canadian Osteopathic Association, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) voted to amend its bylaws to recognize AOA board certification and residency training at its May 2025 meeting.

The CPSA also confirmed its acceptance of the osteopathic medical licensing examination, the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX) of the United States, on an equivalent basis to the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). The changes are currently in effect and will be reflected on the CPSA website soon.
