Performance Exam

The OMT Performance Exam, administered by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians, is a requirement to obtain the OMT designation. The OMT Performance Exam is offered once a year in the Spring at the ACOFP Conference.

Eligibility

Applicants must hold an active primary AOA board certification and have passed the Written Exam for the OMT designation prior to taking the OMT Performance Exam.

Requirements

To take the OMT Performance Exam, submit a completed application, including the required application fee.

Exam Fees

An exam fee of $500 is due at the time of application. An application is considered pending until all fees have been remitted.

Exam Cancellation Fees

• 0 – 30 days before the exam: no refund
• 31 days or more prior to the exam date: 50% refund

Exam Dates and Deadlines

The OMT Performance Exam is offered once yearly in person. The application period opens 6 months prior to the exam administration date. Notification confirming eligibility and the exam schedule is provided to the applicant via email within four weeks upon the approval of your application. Specific time assignments are supplied 4-6 weeks prior to the exam date.

Exam Content

The OMT Performance exam requires the candidate to diagnose and demonstrate an appropriate technique for each of three cases representing the areas of spine, extremities, and systemic diseases.

Exam Scoring

The criteria used for scoring includes diagnosis, identification of landmarks appropriate to the technique, implementation and demonstration of appropriate technique, ability to discuss each technique, and professionalism. A passing score must be obtained on two of the three cases.

Exam Failure

An opportunity to retake is offered during the same exam administration either later in the day or on another consecutive day of testing. In the event of a failure on the second exam attempt within that session, it is recommended that the candidate complete a review course in osteopathic principles and techniques before retaking the OMT performance exam at a future date.
