Earn a Designation of OMT
Physicians who hold an active AOA primary board certification are now eligible to earn a Designation of OMT, signifying their skills and expertise in Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment and osteopathic principles and practice (OPP). The following steps outline the path to earn the designation.
Become eligible
To obtain the Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) designation, you must hold an active primary AOA board certification from one of the following AOA specialty certifying boards:
- American Osteopathic Board of Anesthesiology
- American Osteopathic Board of Dermatology
- American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine
- American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine
- American Osteopathic Board of Neurology & Psychiatry
- American Osteopathic Board of Nuclear Medicine
- American Osteopathic Board of Obstetrics & Gynecology
- American Osteopathic Board of Ophthalmology & Otolaryngology
- American Osteopathic Board of Orthopedic Surgery
- American Osteopathic Board of Pathology
- American Osteopathic Board of Pediatrics
- American Osteopathic Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
- American Osteopathic Board of Preventive Medicine
- American Osteopathic Board of Proctology
- American Osteopathic Board of Radiology
- American Osteopathic Board of Surgery
Non-osteopathic physicians who hold an active primary AOA board certification are eligible to apply for the OMT designation if they have:
- Completed the osteopathic educational requirements in an ACGME-accredited residency program with Osteopathic Recognition.
OR
- Completed an ACGME-accredited residency program without Osteopathic Recognition and have obtained OMM training approved by the BOS and specialty certifying board.
Take the Written Exam
The Written Exam for the OMT designation will be offered Sept. 10-12, 2024. The final application deadline is Friday, Aug. 9, 2024. Learn more.
Take the OMT Performance Exam
After passing the written exam, you are eligible to take the OMT Performance Exam, which is administered once per year in the spring. Learn more.
Receive your OMT Designation
Once you have successfully passed both the written and OMT performance exams you will receive a printed certificate that signifies your primary specialty and the OMT designation.
Maintain your certification
Complete the four components of Osteopathic Continuous Certification (OCC) to promote patient care, practice enhancement and lifelong learning throughout your career.
