Timeline

The American Osteopathic Board of Surgery administers primary and subspecialty certification exams, as well as Osteopathic Continuous Certification requirements. The following stages represent key milestones in the process to obtain primary board certification in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery.

Written Exam

1. Applicants must be within 90 days of completing training or have completed training in order to apply for the Written Exam.

2. The Written Exam is offered annually in May via a remote proctoring platform. The application period opens six months prior to the exam.

Oral Exam

3. Applicants for the Oral Exam must have successfully completed the Written Exam.

4. The Oral and Clinical Exams are offered early fall. The application period opens at least six months prior to the exam date.

5. Candidates must submit application for the Oral Exam with payment. The one time fee of $1,500 includes the Clinical Exam.

Clinical Exam

6. Submit Clinical Exam case logs (50) for review and approval. Deadlines provided specifically to each testing date.

7. Once you receive notification of selected cases (5), you must begin preparing for submission. Deadlines provided specifically to each testing date.

8. The Clinical and Oral Exams are offered in September in conjunction with the ACOS Annual Clinical Assembly.

Become Board Certified

9. Upon successful completion of all exam components, the AOBS will recommend osteopathic board certification to the AOA.

10. You will receive a letter from the AOA via email once certification has been approved.

11. You are now board certified. You will receive your certificate in the mail within 6 weeks of notification of approval.

12. Your primary certification in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery will remain active for one year following date of issue, provided you successfully complete Osteopathic Continuous Certification requirements.

13. Maintain active licensure.

14. Participate in lifelong learning and continuing medical education.

15. Complete the cognitive assessment.

16. Complete the practice performance assessment.
